Clear Spot

[Repeated from Monday 8pm.] Legacy: One Man, Women and Our World. On 13 January 1921 (St. Hilary’s Day), a Church of England Bishop, Arthur Henry Anstey, founded a school for Black girls in (then British colony) Trinidad and Tobago. Anstey's barrier-breaking spirit infused his alumnae, who include musician Winifred Atwell - the UK's first Black British pop star and the only female instrumentalist to date to top the UK charts. As the school celebrates its centenary, alumnae Valerie Taylor (educator and former student, teacher and principal of the school), NND (your host) and Linda Ali (lay Canon of The Church of England), join entrepreneur Dr. Jak Beula (founder of Nubian Jak Community Trust) and Church of England Reverend Sonia Barron (co-chair of the Archbishops' anti-racism task force), to reflect on Anstey's legacy and how one person can make a difference. First broadcast in 2021 to coincide with the school’s centenary, when gatherings were restricted due to the Covid-19 pandemic and now re-broadcast to commemorate the school’s 104th anniversary. Produced and presented by NND.
