Known variously as the 'Clown Prince of Politics' and the 'Pagliacci of Politics', drummer and saxophonist Vic Myers made an unlikely transition from bandleader to legislator. Persuaded to enter the 1932 Seattle Mayoral race as a joke, Myers soon developed serious political ambitions and was elected Lieutenant Governor five times between 1932 and 1952. On this week's show we’ll explore the recordings he made for Brunswick and Colombia during the 1920s and examine how his jovial persona went hand-in-hand with a deep commitment to progressive politics.
