[Repeated from Friday 2:30pm.] A programme of multiple agendas presented by William English. Today’s programme features a couple of rare recordings by the concrete poet John J. Sharkey. Sharkey was born in 1936 in Dublin, moved to London, and for a while managed the gallery of the ICA. His poems appeared in Henri Chopin’s OU revue, Tlaloc, Poetry Ireland, LISN (the poster poem magazine he published with Sonia Sharkey) and several anthologies. He edited the anthology of British concrete poetry called ‘Mindplay.’ He made a film-poem called OPENWORDROBE and in 1964 made his first wall poems, one of which, the 20 foot long ‘Magic Poem’ was shown at the Oxford Kinetic and Concrete exhibition. He also wrote plays for stage and radio. The recordings by Sharkey on today’s show turned up in a bookseller’s catalogue as reel to reel tapes, one of which was recorded in the Middle Earth Club in the 1960s.
