Listen. Let's Talk
[Repeated from Friday 11am.] A weekly show hosted by urbanist Donald Hyslop. This week: The Woodberry Down Estate in Hackney was built following the Second World War to bring much needed modern housing to Londoners. A strong and resilient community developed there. By the end of the twentieth century much of the housing stock was in need of repair, replacement and a major regeneration was planned. Over the last seventeen years that process has been taking place with an ambition to retain and rehouse the original communities whilst also developing new commercial properties for sale. This "twenty first century regeneration model" has and continues to attract both criticism and praise. In this two-part programme, we take a look at the project and process through the unique experience of Simon Slater. As the Independent Tenant and Leaseholder Advisor, Simon has spent the last seventeen years as the interface between all the parties involved - residents, Hackney Council, Berkeley Homes and Notting Hill Genesis Housing Association. Through Simon’s experiences and reflections, recounted as we walked through the estate, we gain insight into the complexities and challenges of such a huge project and the changes it brings.
