Price Poetry
Price Poetry, or The Left Ventricle in Times of Trouble: a collaboration between the Institut Ramon Llull, Films 59 and Tenement Press, Price Poetry is a work-for-the-radio curated and edited by Dominic J. Jaeckle in response to the London Bookfair’s 'spotlight' on Catalan literatures in translation; a special broadcast to commemorate and respond to the first Popular Festival of Catalan Poetry, 25 May 1970, held in Barcelona’s Gran Price Theatre in solidarity with political prisoners incarcerated under the Franco regime. A work of collage and sonic assembly, Price Poetry pairs archival recordings of Agustí Bartra, Joan Oliver (Pere Quart), Salvador Espriu, Joan Brossa, Francesc Vallverdú and Gabriel Ferrater, lifted from Pere Portabella documentary film 'Poetes Catalans' (read in translation by Tenement editor Jon Auman) with original commissions, select readings and songs from Ona Balló Pedragosa, Lucy Mercer, Stephen Watts, Diamanda La Berge Dramm, Dominic J. The Carole Finer Memorial Concert was recorded live at Morley College via Morley Radio, organised under the auspices of the Cornelius Cardew Concerts Trust. It features performances of banjo and bluegrass music, experimental music, improvised music, music from India, poetry, audio-visual interventions and more - all reflecting Carole’s wide-ranging interests and activities and paying tribute to her unquenchable spirit. In this episode we hear from Cambridgeshire beekeeper and sound recordist Richard Youell about his experiences of listening to bees, and we also contemplate the ancient cave paintings of the Iberian peninsula which show the very earliest depiction of a swarm. We hear how bees have inspired popular music from banjo player Baby Copperhead, plus there’s a polyphonic setting by viola player Benedict Taylor. Mollspeak
An experimental audio work written and directed by Maria Fusco, composed by Olivier Pasquet and voiced by Maxine Peake. It reveals the pains, desires and routines of 18th-century maid servants, drawing from extensive archival research and 3D sound scans of historical objects. ‘Mollspeak’ is an eighteenth-century phrase employers coined to mock their servants' dialectical speech. Originally commissioned as an eleven-channel installation work by Sinead McCarthy at Museum of the Home, this is a new broadcast composition, funded by The Elephant Trust. [Repeats Thursday 6am.]
