Resonance 104.4 fm is the world’s first radio art station, established by London Musicians’ Collective. It started broadcasting on May 1st 2002. Its brief? To provide a radical alternative to the universal formulae of mainstream broadcasting. Resonance 104.4 fm features programmes made by musicians, artists and critics who represent the diversity of London’s arts scenes, with regular weekly contributions from nearly two hundred musicians, artists, thinkers, critics, activists and instigators; plus numerous unique broadcasts by artists on the weekday “Clear Spot”.
Sound-Music-Art
Resonance104.4fm is bringing a multitude of experimental sound, new music, radio art and interaction to the capital’s airwaves. Resonance104.4fm broadcasts from the heart of London and is simultaneously streamed on the web at www.resonancefm.com, where you can also check out our full programme listings.
Unique Access Radio
On air 24 hours every day, Resonance104.4fm is the only station of its kind in the UK, providing access radio for London’s astoundingly talented and cultural diverse arts community.
Mission Statement
Imagine a radio station like no other. A radio station that makes public those artworks that have no place in traditional broadcasting. A radio station that is an archive of the new, the undiscovered, the forgotten, the impossible. That is an invisible gallery, a virtual arts centre whose location is at once local, global and timeless. And that is itself a work of art. Imagine a radio station that responds rapidly to new initiatives, has time to draw breath and reflect. A laboratory for experimentation, that by virtue of its uniqueness brings into being a new audience of listeners and creators. All this and more, Resonance104.4fm aims to make London’s airwaves available to the widest possible range of practitioners of contemporary art.

MUSICIANS AND PUBLICISTS
Who do I send my music to?
If you simply send your music to the studio address without a recipient, the chances are that it will end up in our box for unsolicited CDs. The easiest way to find out who to send it to, is to browse the listings, find the show(s) playing music in your field and address any material for the attention of either the show or its presenter.
What address do I send my music to?
Resonance104.4fm
144 Borough High Street
London SE1 1LB
Can I send Resonance my press release?
Yes. Please email them to Ed Baxter info@resonancefm.com. But please do not send attachments (see below).
Can Resonance publicise my event?
To some extent, yes. The first and easiest way to get publicity is simply to post an announcement on the listings section on our Forum. The other, as with sending us music, is to contact any presenters likely to be interested: you can find their email addresses on the schedule listings pages.
Should I send material to Resonance as an attachment?
No. We do not accept unsolicited attachments, as these are the main sources of computer viruses. Please send a plain text link instead.
Will Resonance visit my website or listen to mp3s?
No. As with sending music, if you simply send us your link, it will be ignored (we don’t have the resources to follow these things up): instead, refer to the email addresses of the presenters on the schedule listings pages.
We are a new band - how can Resonance help us?
Our presenters are happy to receive recordings from new and unknown bands: you do not have to have an “official” release or be established. You just have to be interesting. Just follow the general advice given above.
How do I contact a particular Resonance programme maker?

RECEPTION:
Where exactly in London does Resonance broadcast to on FM?
We broadcast in central London. Our transmitter is at London Bridge, and has a range of 5km (3 miles). This is an approximate figure only, and in some areas (such as Hackney and Brixton), the signal may be poor. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do about this, as we are bound by OFCOM (the regulatory body for broadcasting in the UK) to limit our transmitter power, and thus its range.
I have reception problems - can you help?
We have recently upgraded all our equipment. If you have trouble picking us up on FM, first try moving your radio receiver around, possibly into another room (people have reported no reception in one room and excellent reception in another). Other things to try are replacing the receiver’s aerial or using a booster unit; or using a digital tuner rather than an analogue one. Different types of radio work better than others: it is a matter of trial and error (let us know what works for you). In extreme cases, you may have to consider moving house.
What can I do to help prevent interruption from pirate radio broadcasts in my local area?
A number of people have reported pirate radio stations operating, on or nearby the 104.4FM frequency that we use. The most productive way to prevent any future interruption to our service is to contact our licensee board directly. You can either register a complaint by navigating to Ofcom’s Radio interference/reception problems page: http://www.ofcom.org.uk/complain/inter/radio/293512/
Will Resonance be going digital?
No, we have no plans to broadcast on DAB at the moment. But we are currently seeking to broadcast on a temporary channel on Sky digital.
Can I listen to Resonance on the web?
You can listen live to Resonance over the Internet worldwide in two formats: Real Audio and MP3 (at high quality for broadband and low quality for dial-up). Either click on the MP3 or Real Audio links on the website frontpage or click on the listen page for more information.
WORK
Does Resonance take volunteers?
Yes, Resonance is run almost entirely by volunteers. Volunteers are asked to join us on a one-to-one basis by emailing to either Chris or Richard (see below) This is aimed at people wanting to do engineering and related work in the studio, not at programme makers or presenters. Applicants need to first a complete a two week period working in the studio during office hours.
Can I get work experience with Resonance?
Yes. Email Richard Thomas richard@resonancefm.com or Chris Weaver chris@resonancefm.com and include details of your background and, if you are a student, the course you are currently attending . And tell us why you want to be involved with Resonance.
Can I get a job with Resonance?
No, sorry. We have no paid job vacancies at present.
PROGRAMMING
How do I pitch a show proposal to Resonance?
We are always looking for interesting new shows, either one-offs for our Clear Spot; or ideas for a short series. Please email a brief outline, of less than two hundred words, to Ed Baxter info@resonancefm.com. Try and be clear about what you want to do and why you think it will be of interest to Resonance listeners. There is a currently a long waiting list for Clear Spots, so please be patient. We are keen to respond to individual’s enthusiasms and expertise. We have little interest in ideas that cover ground already addressed in our schedule. We especially seek ideas that approach radio in a new way.
Is there an archive of a show that I might have missed?
Resonance runs a repeat schedule that is broadcast between 6.00am and 12 noon daily. Details of the repeat programmes can be found on the schedule listings pages. There is also a taster of most shows in the Audio Archive section. Failing both of these you can try contacting the individual programme makers directly if you want to hear a particular show.
GETTING IN TOUCH
Does Resonance want to hear my comments?
Yes. If the comments are targeted at a programme, simply send the presenter(s) an email or a letter (the studio address is at the top of this page). Please send general comments regarding the station’s content or editorial policy, or complaints about broadcast content to Ed Baxter info@resonancefm.com.
Please send comments regarding technical matters to do with the station, reception, website and so on to Chris Weaver chris@resonancefm.com.Can I get on the Resonance mailing list?
Yes. The easiest way is by completing the questionnaire on the homepage.
What was that song/feature/item I heard the other day?
If you can remember the time the song or other feature was broadcast, then you can first check the schedule listings page, find the programme the track was aired on and then either follow the link to the show’s own website (for playlist details) or email the programme maker directly for further details. If you don’t have a precise idea of when you heard something, it is pretty much impossible for us to track it down, though we will try to help.
Can I interview someone from Resonance for my academic study, thesis, project?
Yes: email Ed Baxter info@resonancefm.com to arrange this.
Can I interview someone from Resonance for my newspaper, magazine, tv show?
