Wembley Arena, March 21st is all time Iranian favourite Googoosh’s only concert in London. It’s also Persian new year, so the event will be packed. Tickets are on average £140, but Six Pillars to Persia has two tickets to give away to one lucky winner.

This Sunday at “Vibe Live” above the Vibe Bar at 91 Brick Lane, London E1 6QL, Electric Sheep Magazine is proud to present the return of our FREE quarterly screening event to help promote the new print issue of the magazine. In keeping with the print issue’s theme of snow, we have a couple of Swedish horror movies “Frostbite(n)” (2006) and “Terror in the Midnight Sun / Rymdinvasion i Lappland” (1959) starting at 2pm presented by Alex Fitch (Strip! / I’m ready for my close-up) and an alternative Christmas Fayre hosted by Virginie Selavy (also Strip! / I’m ready for my close-up) featuring products from Cinéphilia, London Underground Comics (featuring the work of Strip! guests Oli Smith, Sean Azzopardi and Dan Lester + comics by Tom Humberstone and Mark Stafford), Where It’s At Is Where You Arerecords, Sophistikitten retro lingerie, and cakes!

Hectic Peelers – Memories of Matsuko

TUESDAY 2 DECEMBER*, Roxy Bar and Screen, 7:30pm, FREE: For the next Electric Sheep / Resonance FM film club we will be screening Memories of Matsuko, an exuberant bubblegum Japanese melodrama with a dark edge, which pieces together the tragi-comic tale of an eccentric woman who went looking for love in all the wrong places.

Memories of Matsuko

Saturated colour, moody lighting and musical interludes make the film a pure joy to watch, and it is no surprise that it received the audience award at the Tiger Festival in June 08. Adam Torel, head of Third Window Films, the distributors of the film in the UK, will be in attendance to introduce the film and do a Q & A with Electric Sheep magazine editor Virginie Selavy afterwards. This screening has been chosen as one of this week’s Time Out cinema Critic’s choices…
*the screening is usually on the second tuesday of the month, but is a week early this time due to the Roxy’s Christmas schedule…

Based in Okinawa, inventive extended-sanshin player Wataru Kousaka plays live on Paul Fisher’s Farside Radio Show next Wednesday, 24th September, at noon, prior to a performance of New Music from Japan at TSURU, 4 Canvey Street, London, SE1 9AN that evening at 8pm. Sushi is also on the menu at this venue behind Tate Modern.

Hectic Peelers – Raindance Shorts

It’s (nearly) the second tuesday of the month at 7.30pm, so it must be time for Hectic Peelers, Resonance FM / Electric Sheep Magazine’s monthly free film screening at The Roxy Bar and Screen, Borough High Street…
This month we are very excited to present a special event in collaboration with Raindance Film Festival. We’ll be screening the best short films of last year’s festival to mark the release of the 15th Raindance Shorts DVD, which was voted DVD of the week in Time Out, beating Persepolis and Happy-Go-Lucky!
The must-see programme includes The Girls, in which two young girls play cruel games with their father, the brilliant, if chilling Cherries, which imagines the consequences of the Iraq War on a London school, and The Demonology of Desire, which looks at the wish by a twisted young girl for unconditional love. We will be joined by members of the Raindance organisation as well as by some of the filmmakers, who will be happy to discuss their work with the audience. The evening is hosted by Virginie Sélavy (I’m ready for my Close-up / Strip!) and is FREE!

Over the last year Resonance FM has sponsored and broadcast talks given at the ICA as part of their yearly ComiICA festival organised by Paul Gravett. The main ComICA festival takes place in November, but throughout the year there are one off events including tomorrow evening’s Between the panels talk.

In My Diary (Cape), Mio Matsumoto is touchingly honest about coping with her treatment for cancer of the tongue. In Rumble Strip (Myriad), Woodrow Phoenix exposes the often fatal imbalance of power between car drivers and pedestrians. In Incognegro (DC Vertigo), with author Mat Johnson, Warren Pleece shows how a 1930s black reporter who passes for white infiltrates the Ku Klux Klan. In Freddie and Me (Cape), Scottish-born Brooklyner Mike Dawson shows how his obsession with Queen changes and shapes his life. With original art and illustrated readings, these innovators discuss their methods and motives with Paul Gravett, editor of the new Mammoth Book of Best Crime Comics.
