This Saturday – October 4th 2008 – between 6:30 and 11pm we broadcast Oscillatomium - a night of remarkable radio at the Atomium in Brussels brought to you by Mobile Radio
Knut Aufermann + Sarah Washington
The history of electronic music is interwoven with the development of radio. This relationship solidified during the 1950s and 60s as public radio stations built up formidable electronic music studios (Groupe de Recherche Musicale at Radio France, Studio für Elektronische Musik at WDR), whilst radio manufacturers such as Philips and Siemens funded in-house composers, researchers and recordings. Radio transmitters, loudspeakers, microphones: almost all equipment found in radio and music studios is designed to convey or transduce oscillations.
The phenomenon of oscillation will be celebrated as a theme for a night of radio broadcasting live from the Atomium in Brussels at the Nuit Blanche festival. Oscillatomium will showcase electronic music from the memorable and influential Expo ‘58 in Brussels and live performances by exponents of today’s lively experimental electronic music scene. Original works for radio will be offered by an intriguing array of international radio artists. Oscillatomium will be performed in the Ilya Prigogine sphere of the Atomium. Prigogine was awarded his 1977 Nobel prize for chemistry for his explanation of oscillation in chemical reactions.
The radio show will be broadcast live by members of the Radia Network from 19:30 to Midnight CEST:
