Tonight’s extended Clear Spot is a broadcast of the St John’s Smith Square Concert by pupils of Alleyn’s School , featuring not just the music but interviews with many of the players and Director of Music Tim Kermode. Alleyn’s outstanding achievements in music are renowned: Benjamin Wallfisch, John ‘Jack’ Lanchberry, Roger Brenner, Peter Selwyn and Christopher Keyte are just some of the illustrious names whose notable musical careers began at the School. The recent opening of the Michael Croft Theatre (Croft was a former English teacher at Alleyn’s, who went on to found the National Youth Theatre in 1956) has brought professional concert facilities to the School. Students, the local community and touring groups can now benefit from a purpose-built venue designed by award-winning architects van Heyningen and Haward, and developed with acousticians Arup. Coming in the wake of the unexpected postponement of the concert earlier in the year, when “swine flu” meant Alleyn’s had to close, this broadcast – produced by Christopher Dixon – reflects the dedication, skill and enthusiasm of the School, its pupils and teachers, in a celebration of music and community.
The concert comprises performances of
Beethoven Egmont Overture (Symphony Orchestra)
Elgar Cello Concerto (soloist: Genevieve Brothwood) (Symphony Orchestra)
Dag Wiren Serenade for Strings (Chamber Orchestra)
Chilcott Jubilate (Choir & brass ensemble)
Various pieces for Jazz Band (Jazz Band)
