On the 40th anniversary of the Moon landings, Alex Fitch talks to Patrick Moore and Gerry Anderson about how the space race in the 1960s  inspired them. Sir Patrick Moore has presented nearly 700 episodes of The Sky at Night and talks to Alex about his excitement at covering the moon landings in July 1969, choosing the music for the Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and helping save the UK from aliens in Radio 4’s Independence Day: UK. Alex also talks to Gerry Anderson about his SF series Fireball XL5 and how being an air traffic controller for the RAF inspired Thunderbirds.
