Mark Russell and Robert Sandal return to the 104.4FM frequency on Wednesday April 16th with more flamboyantly divergent playlists in the new series of Where’s The Skill In That. Never willfully obscure, but certainly fixated upon the more experimental quarters of music, as well as songwriters, contemporary classical composition, jazz, improv, and peculiarities beyond easy categorisation.
Mark Russell and Robert Sandall, are the former presenters of BBC Radio 3’s much-missed contemporary music programme ‘Mixing It’.
Where’s The Skill In That – Wednesday April 16th 21:00 – 22:00.

Dear Chichivache, this audio should be on archive.org – it’s free and no annoying passwords are needed. Once it’s on archive.org we can feature the podcasts on our own Resonance FM podcast site.

Dear Chichivache, with that link above (highbury) I find I can download the first W(HA)TSIT prog. (Prog.1) of this season but not the others. Not sure why?
No problem tomorrow night – I finish work at 8pm so I can be home and listen to it live.
Some of the music I’ve heard on W(HA)TSIT this season is sublime. Thanks lads.

I’m on a fortnights holiday (yes one of the few firms that still allow such things) at the moment. So last Wednesday I was sat by my computer in Torquay at 9pm to hear the Mark’n'Rob show. Turns out they’re doing some 1998 re-run or something in honour of ResonanceFM starting, and John Peel’s influence in that. Now I was never a big fan of John P, I found his programmes (on the Beeb) fairly disjointed. But now I find he not only had a hand in starting my favorite radio station, but all my favourite bands seemed to have debuted on his programme too (he gave them their big chance).
So how do you think that leaves me feeling? So, no W(HA)TSIT (or ‘What’s it?’ from now on, – please excuse my arrogance) last Wednesday. Maybe tomorrow night? Or have I chosen the wrong fortnight for my holiday this year? Also the streamed mp3 broadcaste isn’t as cohearant (geddit?) as it has been other weeks. (keeps breaking up).
Keep up the good work, never-the-less,
Al

It’s O.K. I’ve cracked it at last! I tuned my RealPlayer to 128k and am paying it on ‘low resonance’ and it’s coming through loud and continuous. So I can listen to my favorite programme ‘Where’s the skill in that’ whenever I’m home from work on time…
I dig what you guys are doing at ResonanceFM –
I Emailed a friend:
One other thing I’m really pleased about,
I’ve sorted out that ResonanceFM/Realplayer
problem I had – just needed switching to
128 frequency (as you probably guessed)
now if I click on their low stream I get
continuous play. I really dig that station
- I like experimental music – as you’ve
probably guessed – yesterday I was listening
to what sounded like kids banging tin cans
on rocks in a township, for about 20 mins.
(that was strangely soothing)
followed by 10 minutes of uninterrupted
gunfire from Afghanistan (really terrifying),
followed by the names of people ‘disappeared’
in Mexico read out in Spanish for five minutes.
Not the kind of stuff you get on the Beeb.
And I didn’t expect anything so shocking
from any radio station, even independent.

And just to prove I’m not a total sycophant I know the W(AH)TSIT guys are Frank Zappa fans but I’ve just Emailed this to a friend:
Zappa? The blokes an asshole.

All he’s doing here is playing scales.
I know ‘cos I’m taking guitar lessons
and the teacher’s trying to teach me
scales. G major, A pentatonic – all that
shit. You practice and play it fast
enough and it sounds impressive.
There’s no heart in this music at all,
it’s just artifice.
I loved Zappa (or rather the Mothers
of Invention) back in the days of
“We’re only in it for the money” when
they were playing music which precursored
what the great group Why? are playing now.
But jazz Zappa? – he took the easy way out.
And to think this guy told the London
Symphony Orchestra they didn’t know how
to play.
Al
(remind me not to post after I’ve had a
few drinks)
Having said that I’ll now be setting up a direct debit with my bank, and Nora’s a lovely assistant-manager, to donate to this great radio station.

Could anyone provide me with an email address for the show? I would like to request a playlist and it seems that sending an email is the only way.
Thanks!

‘ere, what’s going on? It’s Oct. 15th. and yet another ‘repeat’ programme. Are the boys on holiday or what? Or hopefully cooking up great ‘original’ programmes to come. Trouble is the repeats I’ve heard the last two weeks are ones I heard the first time, and as I said above I missed a lot… mind hearing them a second time they impress even more!
P.S.
P.S. By the way Stefan don’t let my opinion of
Frank Zappa put you off him (I know it won’t).
My guitar teacher tells me he was a genius, not
only as a guitarist but as a songwriter too.
The same teacher’s favourite musician is Steve
Vai who can been seen here ‘dueling’ with Zappa
- and I must admit Zappa sounds more soulful/melodic
in his playing; Vai more technically proficient, but cold, maybe.
