Clear Spot – drama triple bill
The Clear Spot on 8 April 2008 at 8pm comprises three examples of new drama for radio. In the first half hour, Peter Blegvad presents Apprentice for Artists, in which we hear the winner and runners-up of a radio-drama challenge workshopped at Warwick Uni. The course was a not-for-credit workshop which Peter co-led with 27 year old US playwright Adriano Shaplin (the Warwick/RSC International Playwright-in-residence) in the CAPITAL Centre at Warwick University. A group of between 7 and 20 students met with us once a week for two terms (20 weeks). Participants were given a crash course in the kind of media the credit courses don’t cover and participants were given the challenge to create work in that medium to bring in next week to present to the group.
In the second half hour, we present two contrasting works from the AV08: Broadcast Festival. First, “Abandoned, ” a 20 minute drama created by a group of young people aged 13 - 19 years. Inspired by Orson Welles’ radio drama “War of the Worlds,” it dramatises the results of an unknown invasion across Teesside. This play was produced in partnership by Media Routes and AV08 Festival. Scriptwriters/Cast: Phiip Mitchell, Thomas Jones, Daniel Clark, Eloise Malthouse, Umer Kashif, Paul Astell, Robin Smith, Rebecca Walters and Rebecca Bland. Scriptwriting Facilitator: Carina Rodney; Technical Support: David Longstaff. Visit www.mediaroutes.org.uk
Secondly from AV08, the radio-art work “Sketch for S.O.B.” written and performed by the Resonance Radio Orchestra, comprising Christophe Alix (voice), Ed Baxter (turntable), Tom Besley (guitar, music box) and Chris Weaver (electronics). Recorded live at Middlebrough’s Institute for Digital Innovation.
